Samuel "Sammy" Clingan (born January 13, 1984 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish football player who has been under contract with the Doncaster Rovers since 2012 .
Club career
Beginnings
After Clingan moved from his home country to Wolverhampton Wanderers as a 16-year-old , he only played in the club's second team. Even after his appointment as captain in 2003, he did not make his breakthrough in the first team, so he was loaned out to Chesterfield FC for the 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons in order to gain match practice at a higher level.
With the Spireites he came to 29 missions in which he scored three goals. Nonetheless, he quickly became a fan favorite.
Nottingham Forest
After returning to the Wolves in 2006, Nottingham Forest expressed interest in signing the midfielder. Although Clingan actually wanted to stay at Chesterfield FC, the club could not pay the transfer fee, he was sold to Nottingham.
After Clingan had joined the team on January 23, 2006, he made his debut four days later in the home league game against Barnsley , the game was lost 2-0.
In the 2006/2007 season Clingan was part of the club's permanent staff until he was out for the remainder of the season due to a broken ankle he sustained in the 5-1 win over Huddersfield Town in March 2007 . After surviving the injury, Clingan made his comeback in the league game against Crewe Alexandra and converted a free kick to the 2-0 final score. This goal was also his first in the shirt of the Reds .
At the end of the season, Clingan was made a contract extension offer, which he declined. On June 17, 2008, Clingan was then committed by Norwich City . There he received a two-year contract.
Norwich City
After his move to Norwich City, Clingan was also set here and became the regular penalty shooter for the 2008/2009 season. All four penalty kicks he took went into goal.
His other two goals were a free kick in a 1-1 away draw against Birmingham City and a similar goal on Matchday 2 in a 4-2 loss to Charlton Athletic that sealed Norwich City's relegation.
After the club's relegation, Clingan was associated with Coventry City, after long transfer negotiations he moved to this club on July 24, 2009. There he signed a three-year contract.
Doncaster Rovers
On October 26, 2012, the Sammy Clingan, without a club since the end of the 2011/12 season, moved to the third division club Doncaster Rovers .
National team
Clingan worked for the U-17, U-19 and U-21 divisions of Northern Ireland. He completed six games for the U-21s and was the team's captain in these games.
Clingan's A-Team debut was made in May 2006 in a friendly against Uruguay at Giants Stadium in New York City . He made his competitive debut for his country's national team on September 2, 2006 in a 3-0 home defeat against Iceland , which marked the start of Northern Ireland's qualification for the 2008 European Championship .
