The Samtdrongo ( Dicrurus modestus ) is a species of bird from the family of Drongos .

It occurs in sub-Saharan Africa : in Angola , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Gabon , Kenya , Príncipe Island, South Sudan , Uganda and in the Central African Republic .

The distribution area includes a variety of habitats mostly from 700–1700 m altitude.

description

The velvet drongo is 24–28 cm tall and weighs 44–53 g. It is very similar to the Mourning Drongo , but the head and underside are matt purple-black, only a light greenish-blue sheen can be seen on the forehead, neck and wings. Compared to the mourning drongo, the tail is forked a little deeper, while the wings look darker when flying.

Young birds have brown eyes, are dull gray and striped black on the underside.

The call of the male is described as a varied repertoire of whistling and fluted tones, nasal calls, also sweet and harsh tones mixed “wichitirchi rit rit”.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects . It can usually be found on exposed branches below the treetops within a forest or in clearings.

The breeding season is between May and June and between October and November.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
