The velvet angelfish ( Chaetodontoplus ) are a genus of angelfish (Pomacanthidae). All species live in the coral reefs of the western Pacific from Japan to Australia . Only Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus lives with a population near Sri Lanka also in the Indian Ocean .

features

Velvet angelfish grow to be 10 to 35 centimeters long. Of all angelfish they are most similar to some butterflyfish genera and can often only be distinguished from them by the sting on the lower gill cover, which is unique to all angelfish .

Way of life

Velvet angelfish live individually, in pairs, rarely in small groups and, as food specialists, mostly feed on sponges and other sessile invertebrates and are therefore completely unsuitable for aquarium keeping , although they are sometimes offered for three to four-digit prices .
