The grape variety Samtrot is a red wine that is practically only important in Germany. It belongs to the group of Burgundy varieties .

Descent, origin

The variety is a hairless mutation of the Pinot Meunier . It was discovered by Hermann Schneider in his Heilbronn vineyard in 1928 and taken over for propagation in 1929 by the State Training and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Weinsberg .

In terms of variety law, Samtrot (variety name from 1950) is classified as a clone of Pinot noir, in terms of labeling law, Samtrot is not a synonym for Blue Pinot Noir in the Württemberg growing region .

Ampelographic features

Differs from the original Pinot Meunier variety in that it has no hairs.

distribution

Samtrot is grown almost exclusively in Württemberg, and here mainly in the Heilbronn area on a total of 381 hectares (as of 2009). In the area survey in Germany, the variety is not shown separately, but is included in the information on Pinot Noir.

Wine

The Samtrot wines are very similar in character to its relative, Pinot Meunier, and live up to its name in taste and color. With a red, warm color, the aromas of raspberry and cherry and a velvety taste, which gives it its harmonious acidity.
