Samuel Apiarius
Samuel Apiarius (* around 1530 in Basel , Switzerland ; † April 12, 1590 ibid) was a Swiss printer and music publisher . He introduced the art of printing in Solothurn .
Life
He was the son of the book printer Matthias Apiarius who immigrated from Germany and was also trained as a book printer and bookbinder . Presumably he had inherited an illness from his mother, which is why he had to struggle with insanity and fits of rage at times . After his father's death in 1554, Samuel took over his workshop in Bern , in which he had already worked in 1547. Before that, however, he had already opened his own workshop in 1548 in the "Herren von Egerdengasse". At times he worked with his brother Siegfried Apiarius . At that time he also received orders from the State Chancellery .
On April 12, 1559, he was expelled from Bern for four years because of an unfounded defamation suit brought by the draper Philipp Sinner - his brother Siegfried continued the workshop during this time - and in 1560 he founded a publishing business in Basel. Hardly back in Bern, he was expelled from Bern again for ten years in 1564 because of pressure from blacksmiths on the Catholic places. He went to Solothurn and founded the first printer's workshop there in 1564/1565. But in 1566 he moved on to Basel, where he stayed until his death. There he printed in his workshop in the “Truckerstuben zum Feigenbaum”, which has been mentioned since 1475, calendars, several newspapers, official notices, but also - like his father Matthias - numerous folk songs. His signet was the bear with a beehive, his father's trademark.
After his death, the workshop was transferred to Johannes Schröter from Schleusingen , who ran it from 1592 until his death in 1634. Apiarius had married Barbara Schottmann in third marriage on May 5, 1588 , who was widowed to Schröter. Even after Apiarius 'death until Schröter took over the workshop, Apiarius' name was used for reprints.
