from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel Joseph Byck (born January 30, 1930 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † February 22, 1974 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was a tire salesman who tried to hijack an airplane to throw it into the White House in hopes of the US - Killing President Richard Nixon .

Life

Byck was the child of poor Jewish parents. He left high school before graduation. In 1954 he enlisted in the military and was honorably discharged in 1956. Byck was married and had four children. He experienced some setbacks in his attempts to establish an economic existence. For example, a loan application from a state institution supporting medium-sized companies was rejected. This prompted Byck to threaten Richard Nixon with the help of tapes that he sent to officials. Thereupon the Secret Service first noticed him in 1972, but classified him as harmless. Because of depression he went to a psychiatric clinic for two months in 1972.

The assassination

In early 1974, Byck decided to carry out an attack on Richard Nixon. Because he was already being watched by the Secret Service , he avoided getting a handgun officially and stole a small bore pistol from a friend. He also built a gasoline-based incendiary device. During the preparations, he recorded audio tapes to explain the motives for his deed, in which he said that he would be declared a hero for his deeds.

On February 22, 1974, Byck drove to Baltimore International Airport . There he shot and killed the 24-year-old police officer George Neal Ramsburg in the terminal and then stormed a type DC-9 , the flight Delta Airlines 523 to Atlanta . When the pilots of the plane told him they could not take off while the wheels were still locked, he shot both of them, grabbed one of the passengers and asked her to fly. Only one of the pilots survived his injuries. Eventually Byck was hit by two bullets that were fired at him by a police officer through the window of the aircraft door. Before the police could get on the plane, Byck killed himself with a shot in the head.
