Samuel G. Freedman

Samuel G. Freedman (* 1955 ) is an American journalist and professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism , where he has taught since 1991. He lives and works in Manhattan . He has two children with his wife, Cynthia. His brother Ken Freedman is the manager of the radio station WFMU .

Life

Freedman grew up in Highland Park, New Jersey . He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and history.

From 1981 Freedman worked for The New York Times , where he was on the reporters' staff until 1987 and currently writes as a columnist on religion and education. He also worked as a reporter for Courier News in Bridgewater and Suburban Trib (a former supplement to the Chicago Tribune ). In addition, his articles and columns have appeared so far. a. in Rolling Stone , USA Today , The Jerusalem Post, and Salon.com .

In 1984 Freedman held a short-term position as adjunct professor of theater at Columbia University's School of the Arts.

Since 1990 Freedman has published several non-fiction books . His first work Small victories (1990) was nominated for the National Book Award and was shortlisted. For his second book, Upon this rock (1993), he received the New York Public Library's Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism . The subsequent The inheritance (1997) was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize .
