Samuel Henry Miller (born April 19, 1840 in Mercer , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  September 4, 1918 there ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 and again from 1915 to 1917 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Miller attended the public schools of his home country and then Westminster College in New Wilmington until 1860 . He then taught as a teacher. During the Civil War , he served briefly in the Pennsylvania State Militia in 1863. Between 1861 and 1870 he published the Mercer Dispatch newspaper. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1871, he began to work in this profession in Mercer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1880 Miller was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Samuel Bernard Dick on March 4, 1881 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1885 . In 1884 he renounced another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Miller initially worked as a lawyer again. Between 1894 and 1904 he was the presiding judge in Mercer County. Then he practiced again as a private lawyer. In the congressional elections of 1914 he was re-elected to Congress in the 28th district of his state, where he replaced Willis James Hulings on March 4, 1915 . Since he was no longer running in 1916, he was only able to complete one further term in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1917. Then he worked again as a lawyer. He died on September 4, 1918 in Mercer, where he was also buried.
