Samuel McGhee

Samuel McGhee ( May 1940 - April 8, 2020 in New Jersey ) was an American politician .

Life

McGhee worked as a history teacher in high school and was dean of admission for student admissions at New Jersey City University for 32 years .

In 1984 McGhee applied unsuccessfully to the Democratic Primary to be a candidate for the election to the Board of chosen freeholders of Union County . In 1986 he was elected to the Hillside Township Committee , the community council of Hillside , New Jersey. In 1988, McGhee was elected Mayor of Hillside. McGhee was the first African-American incumbent in the history of the township . He was then elected mayor two more times. He was also a member of the Union County Improvement Authority and chairman of the board of trustees of the Newark- based radio broadcaster WBGO .

In April 2020, McGhee died at the age of 79 during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States of complications from an infection with SARS-CoV-2 .
