Samuel O. Thier

Samuel Osiah Thier (born 1937 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American physician and manager of academic and medical facilities. He is an expert in kidney disease and biomedical research, but also in health policy and medical education.

Life

Thier first studied at Cornell University and received an MD from the State University of New York in Syracuse in 1960 as a medical degree. His medical career included the Massachusetts General Hospital and the University Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania , where he held a professorship and was Deputy Head of Internal Medicine from 1971 to 1975 .

In 1975, Thier took over the direction of internal medicine at Yale University School of Medicine as Sterling Professor , before becoming President of the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine ) in 1985 . From 1991 to 1994 he was President of Brandeis University , from 1994 to 1997 President of Massachusetts General Hospital . From 1997 to 2002, Thier was the founding CEO of Partner HealthCare System , a major health maintenance organization in the United States' health system . From 2002 Thier held a professorship for internal medicine and health policy at Harvard Medical School , and in 2007 he retired . Honorary positions in which he has held have included director of the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health , director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston , director of the Commonwealth Fund , president of the American Federation of Clinical Research , president of the American Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (American Board of Internal Medicine) and board member of TIAA-CREF , Brandeis University Heller School for Social Policy and Management, and Cornell University Weill Medical College .

Thier was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and to the American Philosophical Society in 2004 . In 2008 he received the George M. Kober Medal from the Association of American Physicians . Samuel Thier holds 16 honorary doctorates .
