Samuel Santos López (born December 13, 1938 in Managua ) is a Nicaraguan politician .

biography

Santos López was temporarily arrested as a supporter of Anastasio Somoza Debayle after the protest parade on January 22, 1967 against the candidacy of Anastasio Somoza Debayle and the subsequent massacre on Avenida Roosevelt . He was then no longer politically active until 1979, but went into exile in Honduras , where he worked in private companies and was most recently managing director of the advertising company Noble y Asociados. In 1979 he returned to Nicaragua and worked temporarily for an oil company .

Immediately afterwards he took part in the revolution of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) , which led to the escape of dictator Somoza Debayle on July 17, 1979. He then became Vice President of the National Development Bank (Banco Nacional de Desarrollo) and then, in 1980, Minister in the Junta of Reconstruction. In this position he had significant influence in 1982 on the passing of the Law on Donations of Money (Ley de Donaciones). Between 1980 and 1985 he was also Mayor (Alcalde) of Managua. In this capacity, he met with then Mayor of New York City , Ed Koch , in October 1983 . In the conversation, both sides blamed each other for the critical situation in Central America .

In 1986 he was appointed secretary for finances of the FSLN by Daniel Ortega and held this position until 1992. Between 1986 and 1992 he was also president of ADYSA and of the publishing house "El Amanecer" (The Sunrise), which runs the newspaper "Diario Barricada" issued. He was also a member of the National Assembly and the Sandinista Political Commission. At the same time he became secretary for international relations of the FSLN in 2006 and also representative of the Sandinista at the Socialist International .

In addition to his political activities, he also became a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua (UNAN). He is also the managing director of several real estate companies. In addition, he was the founder and director of the securities exchange (Bolsa de Valores de Nicaragua) and a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Tourism as well as other national and international business organizations.

After the election of the FSLN, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Daniel Ortega on January 11, 2007 . At the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2008, he gave a speech on global issues such as famine , high oil prices , climate change , terrorism and human rights .
