Samuel Slater (born June 9, 1768 in Belper , Derbyshire , England , † April 21, 1835 in Webster , Massachusetts , USA ) was an early American entrepreneur and industrialist .

He is known as the "father of the American industrial revolution " because when he emigrated to the USA at the age of 21, he brought with him plans for the so-called Spinning Jenny , a spinning machine invented in England around 1764, which laid the foundation for the American textile industry . To do this, he broke British law, which forbade the taking of industrial know-how to other nations. In Pawtucket , Rhode Island , he convinced his new employer of his knowledge and from 1793 built the first water-powered textile mill in the USA based on the model of British factories.

He is also known as the "father of the American Sunday School " because he set up Bible courses for young people in his works.
