Samuel Stahli

Samuel Stähli (born March 5, 1941 in Bern ; † December 8, 1987 ) was a Swiss civil engineer . He is considered a pioneer of the Swiss cycle timetable and the Bahn 2000 project .

Life

Samuel Stähli was born on March 5, 1941 in Bern and developed a great interest in the railroad as a child.

He grew up in Bern and studied civil engineering. 1967 graduated with a thesis on the expansion of the Wynentalbahn . In 1968 he joined the cross-departmental study office for construction and operations departments of the General Directorate of the Swiss Federal Railways .

"Spinner Club"

On his own initiative, in his spare time in the so-called Spinner Club, he developed the study of the Swiss timetable - a new passenger train concept . In addition to Samuel Stähli, Hans Meiner and Jean-Pierre Berthouzoz also belonged to the spinner club . They met every Monday evening from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for one winter to develop a regular schedule for Switzerland. The 19-page report on the basic questions of timetable design was presented in March 1969.

To present the concept, they used a topographical-systematic network graphic instead of the classic picture timetables . On June 16, 1972, the three presented the concept at a symposium. In preparation for this presentation, the three came up with the term cycle timetable .

The SBB were convinced by this concept and commissioned a broad working group to prepare the timetable for the specific work. This group also belonged to Samuel Stähli and his two colleagues. The cycle timetable was implemented in 1982.

In the Spinner Club , ideas for tram right of way, gatekeeping systems and bus lanes were also born.

Further work

In 1980 he was appointed overall project manager for the Zurich S-Bahn . With his concept he helped the concept that had previously been rejected several times to achieve a breakthrough.

In 1984 he switched to the future projects team at the SBB General Directorate in Bern to lay the foundations for the Bahn 2000 concept . As its project manager, he significantly influenced the concept.

In 1986 he was appointed deputy director of BLS AG . During his activity, he developed his first ideas as a basis for the new railway-Alpine transversal in the area of ​​the Lötschberg .

death

Stähli died on December 8, 1987, at the age of 46, of an illness that was described as insidious and very rare. Two days earlier, the Bahn 2000 project had been approved in a referendum.

He last lived in Niederscherli .
