Tailor (born December 8, 1986 in Pretoria ; real name Melanie Le Roux ) is a South African musician ( singer-songwriter ).

Melanie Le Roux grew up as the second child of a teacher and a restorer, both Afrikaans , in Johannesburg . Even in elementary school, she says she wrote her first song about lip gloss . She learned to play the piano , guitar and drums .

Life

At 15 she sang and played in the punk band Mel-Funktion ; Even when they were teenagers, the band got a recording deal . Several singles appeared and the group toured South Africa and Japan , but did not make an album.

The band split after three years. Melanie Le Roux temporarily withdrew. She has lived and worked in Cape Town since 2007 . During this time she adopted the stage name Tailor. She sings in English and plays several instruments, particularly the piano and acoustic guitar; on her debut album she also plays the bass and takes care of the percussion. Their music was influenced by bands and singers such as Korn , Blink-182 and Avril Lavigne . In 2013 she lives in Melkbos, a coastal suburb of Cape Town, where she also worked as a guitar teacher until her breakthrough with her first album. The Dark Horse , produced by Matthew Fink, was released on July 30, 2012 on Just Music ; it was mastered by Ted Jensen, who received a Grammy for his work with Norah Jones . The single Wolf had previously been released. In 2016 she recorded her third album, Trust , in Austin (USA). She shot music videos for the singles 1000 Miles and Trust contained on it, which she herself directed.

Wolf was added to the playlists of various adult contemporary radio stations - "surprising", as the editor of the website Indie Does It , Genevieve Vieira, says. In Germany, Wolf was on the FluxFM playlist on July 1, 2012 . The video for Wolf entered the video top ten of the music channel MK on DStv; GoTv made it the video of the week. The American nylon magazine included Wolf in its five most popular songs of the week, Good Listener, on August 3, 2012 . On August 13, Tailor appeared with Wolf on the MKTV TV program Studio 1 , which is dedicated to the local music scene. In autumn 2012, Tailor went on tour through South Africa with the renowned alternative rock band Zebra and Giraffe . In January, The Dark Horse was listed in the top 30 albums on Chaminade University of Honolulu's Hawaiian radio station CUH .

Her record label saw the music of Tailor's debut album ranging from modern folk to blues rock to pop and soul. The Times Live critic noted "the display of a strong voice coupled with powerful music". The nationwide daily newspaper The Citizen wrote that it was an album "that should not be judged after listening to it once".

With the single and the video for Wolf , Tailor was nominated in 2013 in the categories Best Video and Best Newcomer for the MK Awards of the TV channel DStv. In March 2013, The Dark Horse was nominated for the South African Music Awards (SAMA) of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) in the categories Best Alternative Album and Newcomer of the Year .

In 2015 she received another SAMA nomination for the album Light . Her song Shaped like a Gun from the album The Dark Horse was used in season 12 and Wolf in season 13 of the US television show So You Think You Can Dance .
