The San-shiki Kaejiki ( German  about: "Type 3 Substitution Machine" , Japanese 三 式 換 字 機 , Allied alias : "Green", Japanese グ リ ー ン 暗号 ) is a modified replica of the German rotor key machine developed in Japan Enigma .

The Japanese replica of the German Enigma-D has a keyboard and lamp display with Japanese characters . In contrast to the German original, the rollers are not arranged on a common horizontal axis, but lie flat next to each other with axes pointing vertically upwards and have only 25 contacts. In terms of cryptography, it essentially corresponds to the German model and consequently also has its weaknesses . It was rarely used. Only two surviving copies are known.

This purely Japanese machine must not be confused with the Enigma-T (allied code name "Opal"). This is the German development of a special Enigma model that was specially designed for the communications of the two war allies Germany and Japan during World War II . This was named after the German Grand Admiral of the former Imperial Navy Alfred von Tirpitz (1849–1930) as the “Tirpitz machine” (called Tirupitsu by the Japanese ).
