San Cristoforo al Lago is a fraction of the municipality of Pergine Valsugana in Trentino .

location

The place is on the north bank of the Caldonazzo lake .

The historic center is located on a rocky hill that was previously surrounded by the water of the lake. After the area had been drained (see history ), a district was created on the new bank that is mainly used for tourism. The beaches of the village are bordered in the east by the Canneti di San Cristoforo biotope (approx. 9.4 hectares ).

art

At the highest point of the hill on which the historic town center stands is the eponymous church of St. Christopher (12th century), where, according to tradition, there was a temple of Diana and Neptune in ancient times . The Gothic portal and bell tower have been preserved from the original church .

At the foot of the hill there are still remnants of the port facility from which the fishing boats started before the swamp was drained. One of the buildings was recently restored and is to be turned into a local museum.

history

The oldest evidence of San Cristoforo relates to the church, which was probably built in the 12th century, but was first mentioned in 1215. Around 1300 an unspecified number of houses are mentioned that belonged to the parish priest of Pergine.

Until the 18th century, San Cristoforo was surrounded by a swamp that stretched as far as Pergine, and the place was connected to the mainland by a wooden walkway. In 1777 the lengthy bonuses by the municipality of Pergine began. Then the space was created for an expansion of the village. First, a few houses were built in the east of the town center, between the railway system and the lake.

The first tourism businesses came into being in the fin de siècle . Before the First World War, the two psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Sándor Ferenczi were guests in the former Seehotel .

traffic

San Cristoforo shares a Valsugana railway station with Ischia .
