Johann Gottfried ("Götz") Maltusch (born September 8, 1911 in Berlin ; † March 28, 1980 in Bückeburg ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian and regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schaumburg-Lippe .

Life

Maltusch studied theology in his hometown of Berlin , where he came into conflict with the Hitler Youth during the Nazi era as the head of an evangelical student Bible study group and was taken into protective custody several times as a member of the Confessing Church . In 1936 he passed the first and in 1939 the second theological exam before the examination committee of the Confessing Church Berlin-Brandenburg. From 1936 to 1940 he was a youth pastor in Berlin. After military service and imprisonment in 1945, he briefly became pastor at St. John's Church in Lüneburg . In December of the same year he took up a position as youth pastor of the Oldenburg regional church , played a key role in building up church youth work in Oldenburg and took care of support for the refugee youth. In 1949 he also became head of the Evangelical Aid Organization in Oldenburg.

In 1957 Maltusch moved to Hanover as managing director of the Inner Mission . He played a major role in the merger of the Inner Mission with the aid organization of the Hanoverian regional church . In 1959 he became the managing director of the combined facility, whose expansion he had a lasting influence. In 1966 he was elected by the regional synod of Schaumburg and Lippe to succeed Wilhelm Henke as regional bishop. His term of office was marked by the intensification of parish life, especially by the construction of new parish halls, but also by the renovation of historically significant church buildings.

In 1978 the Ev.-luth. Regional Church Schaumburg-Lippes under his leadership in a hitherto unique process because of its support for violent organizations from the special fund of the anti-racism program, their membership in the World Council of Churches was suspended. The trigger was the approval of 170,000 DM for the Patriotic Front in Rhodesia .

One of Maltusch's particular concerns was the memory of Johann Gottfried Herder , who had worked as a preacher and consistorial councilor in Bückeburg from 1771 to 1776. The scientific stove conferences he initiated enjoyed an international reputation.

Maltusch retired in October 1979. He died of heart failure just months later.

Awards

Maltusch was the bearer of the Great Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit and the Uhlhorn plaque of the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover.
