San Domenico is a church in the city of Faenza in Emilia-Romagna .

History and description

The Dominican Friars came to Faenza almost at the same time as the Franciscans . Eight years later the community gave them a piece of land planted with vines (in loco vinearum), on which they built their first church and their first monastery, which they dedicated to St. Andrew and which was called in vineis or inter vineas .

Important works of art are the works carried out in the 16th century, of which the cloister and the beautiful central cistern by Father Domenico Paganelli have been preserved.

With the exception of the choir, the church was completely rebuilt between 1761 and 1765 according to a design by Francesco Tadolini from Bologna, the construction was supervised by the builder Gioacchino Tomba , the father of the architect Pietro Tomba .

After the restoration , the Dominican community could be renewed in 1819 because the bishop had returned the church to the Dominicans. On May 22, 1842, Bishop Giovanni Benedetto Folicaldi inaugurated the church in honor of St. Andrew and the altar of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. On April 11, 1843, the bishop granted the opening of a chapel connected with the church for the veneration of the crucified.

In 2008, after centuries of activity, the Dominicans renounced ownership of the church and the affiliated parish, which has thus passed into the hands of the Curia.

Inside

The high altar of the Church of San Domenico was built in 1766 according to a plan by Francesco Tadolini and the marble work was carried out by Giovanni Toschini

The choir resembles that of the Santissimo Redentore basilica in Venice , with Corinthian colonnades and the 16th century wooden benches carved by Domenico Paganelli .

Individual evidence

  1. Giovanni Toschini, who only appears as a stonemason and whose activity is documented up to the end of the century, for chronological reasons must be a different sculptor than the one who initially worked in Venice between the 16th and 18th centuries . It is documented there in 1695 and then in Ravenna , where he has been running a workshop since 1700.
