San Gabriel is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States , with 39,718 inhabitants (as of 2010 ). The urban area has a size of 10.7 km². The name derives from the Mission San Gabriel , the cornerstone of which was laid here by the Franciscans on September 8, 1771. Ten years later, the Mission founded the Los Angeles Settlement . The city's motto is therefore City With A Mission . Today almost half of the population of San Gabriel are of Asian descent.
The American comedian Curly Howard died here on January 18, 1952.
