San Genesio
San Genesio was a place in Tuscany .
location
The place was near the river Elsa and just south of its confluence with the Arno below and northeast of San Miniato . It was at the junction of the Via Francigena , the pilgrimage and trade route from Western Europe to Rome, with the Via Pisana , the trade route from Florence to Pisa .
history
When San Miniato, located on a mountain above San Genesio, was increasingly preferred as a castle by the German emperors, especially the Staufers , for strategic reasons , and a settlement developed from it, San Genesio was at a decisive disadvantage. It first lost its parish and was completely destroyed a little later, in 1248 .
The patron saint of San Genesios, Genesius of Rome is still today the patron saint of San Miniatos.
