Dam of the reservoir

The San Luis Reservoir is a reservoir in the US state of California in Merced County . The lake is located in the Diablo Range 72 kilometers southeast of San José . It collects the water from the Sacramento River Delta . It is pumped into the lake by two canals, the California Aqueduct and the Delta Mendota Canal , which are used for agricultural irrigation, and from San Luis Creek . The San Luis Creek is sometimes mistakenly referred to as inflow of the dam, but he is dammed not directly.

Depending on the water level, the reservoir is 14.5 km long at its longest point and 8 km wide at its widest point. The 51 square kilometer lake has a storage capacity of 2.25  cubic kilometers and is 165 meters above sea level . It is used as a pump storage basin, into which water is pumped up and then drained off at other times of the day. It is the largest storage basin in the USA that is operated in a so-called shunt.

The barrier structure is a large earthfill dam (San Luis Dam) . It is located at the eastern end of the reservoir and is also called BF Sisk Dam ; according to Bernie Sisk , an American congressman who did a lot for the water supply in California's long valley . Neither the height of the dam nor the storage space of the reservoir are outstanding, but the volume of the barrier structure is. With almost 60 million m³, it is among the 20 largest on earth. The dam is also one of the tallest earth embankments in the United States.

The dam is owned by the Bureau of Reclamation , but is from the California Department of Water Resources operates as part of the State Water Project. The San Luis Reservoir serves as the upper basin and the Gianelli Forebay as the lower basin of the Gianelli pumped storage power plant . The hydropower plant has eight Francis turbines , which together generate 424 megawatts. Selling the electricity at peak times will reduce the cost of the state water project, specifically the California Aqueduct. A short 230 kV power line conducts the electricity in an easterly direction to the distribution station.

The reservoir is located in a state recreation area named after him, in which there are many recreational opportunities - including for anglers, boaters and campers. The lake is known for its strong winds and therefore there are warning lights on Romero Outlook, on Basalt Campground and at Quien Sabe Point .

At the Romero Outlook there is also a visitor center with a lot of information about the dam and the power plant.
