The Chiesa di San Paolo Maggiore is a baroque church in downtown Bologna . Located at Via Carbonesi 18, it was built between 1606 and 1611 and has important paintings by Lodovico Carracci , Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Guercino .

The Church was originally built for the Congregation of Regular Clerics of St. Paul, known as Barnabites , dedicated to the Apostle Paul of Tarsus . While the nave was completed at the beginning of the 17th century based on designs by Giovanni Ambrogio Magènta (1565–1635), the dome and front facade were missing. The latter was added in 1636 by Ercole Fichi (1595–1665); construction of the dome began in 1634. Fichi was also given the task of designing two saints in the niches, Carlo Borromeo and Filippo Neri .

The church remained closed during the Napoleonic period . It was reopened in 1819 and thoroughly renovated by Angelo Venturoli (1749–1821). After being closed again, it was re-inaugurated in 1878. On January 27, 1961, the church was awarded the title of minor basilica .

Furnishing

The high altar dates from the years 1643 to 1650 and was executed particularly splendidly. The sculpture Decollazione di San Paolo , the beheading of St. Paul, commissioned by the Barnabites and designed by the Bolognese Alessandro Algardi . The artist also made the medallion ceiling over the altar and tabernacle. Above the altar are important paintings by masters of the Bolognese School , by Guercino, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, also known as Lo Spagnolo and Lodovico Carracci, whose depiction of the Immaculate Conception is commonly referred to as Il paradiso . Guernica is dedicated to St. Gregory and the souls in purgatory .

One of the ceiling paintings, Christ and the Scholars , is by Giacomo Cavedone and Guido Reni . Cavedone also painted the murals Adoration of the Shepherds and Adoration of St. three kings . By Giovanni Andrea Donducci called Mastelletta originate also two large wall painting depicting a Cristo all'Orto and a Station of the Cross.

Inside the building, several vaults were frescoed by the brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Rolli , showing the life and deeds of St. Paul in Athens.
