San Pedro Pochutla or Pochutla is a city with about 15,000 inhabitants and the capital of the municipality of the same name (municipio) with about 50,000 inhabitants in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. Apart from the Soconusco region in the state of Chiapas , it is the southernmost municipality in Mexico.

Geography and climate

The city of San Pedro Pochutla lies at a height of approx. 150  m in a former swamp area of ​​the coastal region of the state of Oaxaca. The city of Oaxaca de Juárez is a good 240 km (driving distance) to the north. The seaside resorts of Puerto Ángel and Zipolite on the Pacific are each approx. 15 km to the south and south-west. The climate is tropical and warm; Rain (approx. 895 mm / year) falls mainly in the summer months.

history

The area around Pochutla has been populated by the Zapotecs since the 8th century ; in the 12th century the Mixtecs extended their sphere of influence to this point. In the 15th century the region came under Aztec influence; after that the Spaniards came and initially called the place Huehuetan .
