San Sebastiano is a church in Venice , in the Dorsoduro sestiere , which contains a considerable part of the life work of Paolo Veronese . There are also sculptures by Alessandro Vittoria and his grave in the church.

history

In 1396 the Hermit monks of St. Jerome founded a small monastery and poor house on the island of Angelo Raffaele. A small oratory was also built, which was replaced by a larger church around 1450. Under Napoleon I , the monastery was closed in 1810. The monastery was then reopened as a branch of San Trovaso and later by Angelo Raffaele and partially demolished until the building was finally used by the University of Venice .

Today's church building

In 1505, Antonio Abondi , known as Lo Scarpagnino , designed a larger new building, which was completed in 1546. Scarpagnino's building is a brick building built in the style of the Renaissance. The two-story facade is completely clad in Istrian marble with sparse ornaments and is crowned by a triangular gable. The church faces the canal, the campanile of the church was built between 1544 and 1546.

The church is a rather unconventional hall building that is equipped with galleries on three sides. The space is extended like a transept by two transverse arms. The square presbytery is separated from the nave by three arches. Of the three adjacent choir chapels, the middle one is distinguished by a round apse and a dome with a drum .

The cycle of paintings by Paolo Veroneses

Altarpiece by Paolo Veronese in San Sebastiano, Venice

San Sebastiano is famous because of the decoration by Veronese pictures, which are counted among his masterpieces. The interior is shaped by Veronese painting cycles executed between 1555 and 1570. In the carved and gilded ceiling of the nave are his pictures painted on canvas with the themes: Triumph of Mardochai , repudiation of the Vashti and Esther is crowned by Ashaver .

The high altar was built between 1559 and 1562. The altarpiece integrated there is a late work by Veronese. A Madonna enthroned with the Saints Peter, Catherine of Alexandria and Francis is depicted. The dome fresco with a coronation of Mary, also by Veronese's hand, has not survived.

The ceiling of the sacristy was also furnished by him, one of the putti in the corner fields bears a plaque with the date of the completion of the ceiling painting, November 22, 1555. The main image of the ceiling is a Coronation of Mary , represented in four satellite images by the Evangelists with their Symbols. The pictures above the simple choir stalls in the sacristy are workshop work.
