Sander van Smaalen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sander van Smaalen (* 1958 in Zwolle , Netherlands ) is a Dutch chemist and professor of crystallography at the University of Bayreuth .

Career

Van Smaalen studied chemistry at the University of Utrecht , the Netherlands , and then received his PhD from the University of Groningen , the Netherlands . He then worked as a post-doc at the State University of New York at Buffalo , New York , USA , at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Since November 1995 he has held the chair for crystallography at the University of Bayreuth . His main research interests are the crystallography of aperiodic crystals and the crystallography of disordered crystals. He uses X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction under normal conditions and at high and low temperatures and high pressures as experimental methods . His main interest is the relationship between crystal structure and physical properties, as well as the understanding of structural phase changes .
