The petrel Ardenna carneipes , here in flight over the sea, is a common breeding bird on Sandy Island.

Sandy Iceland is a 20  hectare large island , about five kilometers off the coast of Windy Harbor , south of Perth , in the southwest of Western Australia .

It is part of the D'Entrecasteaux National Park and an important breeding site for sea ​​birds .

The island is oriented roughly from northwest to southeast, about 800 meters long and 300 meters wide, flat and mostly sandy. There is a section of limestone and dunes at the northwest end. The southern coastline consists of migmatitic rock .

The island should not be confused with the phantom island Sandy Island , which was incorrectly listed off the east coast of Australia, in older maps between Queensland and New Caledonia .

Flora and fauna

About 46 plant species were recorded. Grasses are the dominant vegetation, added, among other Carpobrotus rossii (in English Pigfacepig face ) and Lobelia anceps .

The island is the organization BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area was rated (IBA, important bird area), because of the high number of breeding birds of petrels -Art Blass foot Shearwater ( Ardenna Carneipes or Puffinus Carneipes ), with over 300,000 breeding pairs. In addition, there are a large number of brooding dwarf terns of the Australian tern ( Sternula Nereis or Sterna Nereis ), English Fairy Tern . Both species are on the Red List of Endangered Birds. Other birds that breed on the island include herring gulls , other petrel species and the sooty oystercatcher ( Haematopus fuliginosus ).
