The Zangezur Mountains ( Russian Зангезурский хребет ; Azerbaijani Zəngəzur Dağları ; Armenian Զանգեզուրի լեռնաշղթա ) is a mountain range west of the historical region of Zangezur in Eastern Armenian plateau .
It runs in the border area between the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic and the Armenian provinces of Syunik and Vajoz Dzor . It extends from the upper reaches of the Arpa and Tərtər in the north to the Aras in the south. The Sangesurkamm has a length of 130 km. The highest peak of the mountain range is the 3904 m high Kaputjugh . The Ajozdsorski Mountains branches off to the west.
The mountain range consists mainly of granite and granodiorite . The western slopes are covered by steppe and semi-desert landscapes. The eastern slopes are wooded up to a height of 800 m (oak, beech, ash, maple). Subalpine vegetation grows above it . There are ore deposits of copper and molybdenum .
