The Sankarani is a tributary of the Niger in West Africa .
course
The river has its source on the Kourandou massif in southern Guinea . From there it flows north to the border of the northern Ivory Coast and briefly forms the border between the two states. Then it flows to the west where its largest tributary, the Dion, also flows into it. At its mouth, it changes course again to the north. After a further stretch, it swings to the northeast and forms the border with southern Mali until it finally crosses the border. Shortly afterwards, at the mouth of the Ouassoulou-Balé, it was dammed into a lake by the Sélingué dam. Soon after leaving the lake, it unites with the Niger about 40 km above the city of Bamako .
Catchment area
In the catchment area of the Sankarani, a number of crops are traditionally grown, it has deposits of iron and gold and covers almost 35,500 km². Two thirds of them are in Guinea. After the Sélingué Dam was built in 1980, the number of cubic meters of water from the Sankarani, which actually reached Niger, was almost halved .
