The Sankt-Christophorus-Kirche is the Protestant church of the village of Dodendorf in Saxony-Anhalt , which belongs to the municipality of Sülzetal . It belongs to the parish "Im Sülzetal" in the parish Egeln of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Architecture and history

At the site of today's late Gothic church there was a late Romanesque predecessor building, of which the church tower was preserved. The tower, which was built on a rectangular floor plan, to the west of the nave, is perpendicular to it. The tower, which is covered by a gable roof, has sound openings designed as a round arch .

The late Gothic church hall was renovated at the end of the 17th century. In the east, the hall closes with a three-eighth end.

The interior of the church was damaged in a major fire in 1760. All church images were lost here. On May 5, 1809, the battle of Dodendorf took place in the immediate vicinity of the church . The wall of the churchyard was used as a cover during the fighting, as a memorial to the north of the church commemorates. After an accident involving the pastor from Buckau and Fermersleben, the pastor from Dodendorf was also active in the Buckau and Fermersleben churches in 1828/29, alongside other colleagues .

In 2008 the building was restored.

Furnishing

There are galleries on the western and southern walls . On the west gallery is an organ with a baroque prospect from 1750. A large octagonal baptismal font comes from the Gothic period .

Noteworthy is a carved provided with lateral passages Altaraufsatz with a dated 1693 Crucifixion painting . A painting depicting the Last Supper is in the predella , the entombment of Christ is depicted in the essay. In the parapets of the pulpit there are reliefs depicting the evangelists .

The windows on the eastern side are decorated with stained glass , which was probably made around 1870 during a restoration. The representations show scenes from the childhood of Jesus.

Churchyard

The churchyard is surrounded by a wall. There were various old tombstones in the churchyard. These include the tombstone of Johannes Dezimator , pastor of the church , who died in 1588, and another pastor's tombstone from 1593. Three gravestones with inscriptions from the 18th century were also remarkable. Currently (March 2008), however, the gravestones are stacked on the southern wall of the cemetery.

To the south of the church there is a war memorial for the Dodendorfer who perished in the world wars.
