The Roman Catholic Church of Saint James is located on Staromiejska Street in Sandomierz , Poland .

history

Since 1226 there was a settlement in front of the city of the Dominican Order , founded in 1215 . The Dominicans first built one dedicated to St. Paul , the church of Iwo Odrowąż, Bishop of Cracow and uncle of St. Hyacinth of Poland , was donated. Then they built their monastery. The founder of the monastery was St. Hyacinth. Construction work on the church began in 1236 and lasted until around 1250. It probably came to a standstill during the first Mongol storm in 1241. A special feature is the late Romanesque portal on the north side.

overall view

The church was built as a three-aisled basilica made of brick masonry. The fact that it is made of brick, although the urban area has suitable natural stone building material, is a special feature of medieval Sandomierz. The Gothic St. Mary's Cathedral , the town hall and older parts of the castle also show brickwork. The Sankt-Jakobs-Kirche is considered to be the first church building in the Kingdom of Poland, which was built entirely from brick masonry. In terms of architectural history, the design of the north portal is related to Lombard churches. Some parts of the masonry were designed with patterns of ornate bricks (braided band and zigzag patterns ). Following the construction principles of the Dominican Order, the church building did not have an integrated bell tower, only a roof turret with a bell. It was not until 1314 that a bell tower was built as a campanile at a short distance from the church.

Following local tradition of found superior of the monastery, the Blessed Sadok , and 60 other Dominicans and visitors to the worship of the city's martyrdom , as the city in 1260 by a raid by the Tatars devastated and plundered. A memorial chapel was built for the victims in the monastery grounds, thereby creating the basis for a pilgrimage .

The interior of today's church is adorned with the preserved architectural components (ribbed vaults) and the wooden fixtures, as well as valuable glass windows; they date from the years 1910 to 1918 and were made according to the design by Karol Frycz .

Pilgrimage routes
