The Sandomierz Cathedral or the Cathedral Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin ( Polish Bazylika Katedralna Narodzenia Najwietsej Marii Panny ) is a Roman Catholic church in Sandomierz , Poland . The cathedral of the Diocese of Sandomierz is dedicated to Mary , the Mother of God , invoking Mary's Birth .

history

The original Romanesque church was built above the Vistula and was first mentioned in 1148, in 1191 it was designated as a collegiate church by Casimir II . This was destroyed by the Tatars in the 13th century and finally by the Lithuanians in 1349. In 1360, King Casimir the Great founded a new Gothic college church, the choir could be older. The church consecration took place in 1382. When the Swedes withdrew in 1656 under Charles X Gustav , the roof of the church caught fire. The church was given a baroque facade from 1670 to 1674 and the interior was also redesigned in the Baroque and Rococo styles during the 18th century . With the creation of the Diocese of Sandomierz in 1818 it was elevated to a cathedral and received in 1960 by Pope Paul VI. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica.

The hall church the brick Gothic has three naves , of which the outer narrow, the church with rib vaults are covered rises above a roof turret , the bell tower is still free at the entrance. The elongated choir closes with a three-sided apse . The wall paintings of Russian-Byzantine polychromy dating from the first half of the 15th century have been preserved on its walls. The frescoes were uncovered and restored between 1932 and 1934. The altars and portals of the cathedral were made of black marble and set off with pink marble; they come from the stone workshops in Czerna near Krakow. The rococo altars by master Maciej Polejowski from the second half of the 18th century on the inner pillars are significant .
