Architecture and history

Presumably there has been a church in Klepzig since around 1100. The first documentary mention comes from 1363. The church at that time was consecrated to St. Pankratius. For this previous building, an organ was built by Heinrich Tiensch in 1688/1689 . It was repaired in 1708 and finally sold to Roitzsch in 1757 . From around 1740 the church was considered dilapidated. The church tower showed cracks, the grave vaults were considered to be threatened with collapse. It was therefore decided to demolish the building, which was also considered too small, and to construct a new one. The demolition work began in the spring of 1754.

The current building was built in 1755/1756 as an initially single-nave church with a three-sided eastern end. To the west of the nave there is a church tower with a square floor plan, but with an octagonal shape in its upper section. Its tower crown was put on in 1755. However, 14 years passed before the official inauguration of the building. The high tower, designed in the Baroque style, has a dome and a lantern . The year 1865 can be read as an inscription above the west portal in the tower. In the years 1875/1876, according to another statement in 1873/1874, the church was expanded. The tower and choir were preserved. However, the walls of the nave were moved outwards. It thus received broad cross arms including a new roof and thus the appearance of a cruciform church. Instead of the old roofing with hand-painted bricks , it was given an English roofing with slate. A sacristy is said to have been built on the east side , according to other information it was preserved from the time before the renovation, but was probably also expanded and raised.

A Romanesque relief tondo with the head of the apocalyptic Christ is inserted into the east wall of the choir. Below is an inscription stone with the inscription 1623.

The interior of the church is spanned by a flat ceiling and has a central cross-shaped space. In the arms of the cross, galleries rest on cast-iron pillars under three arcades . They replaced four galleries that existed before the renovation.

The altar dates from the second half of the 19th century. The pulpit is in front of the north wall, where it was moved from the choir during the renovation. The organ front and the font were built in the 18th century . The first organ in the new building was created in 1768 by Johann Christoph Zuberbier from Köthen .

On March 17, 1995, the Association for the Preservation of the Klepziger Church eV was founded, which successfully campaigned for the reconstruction and preservation of the church.

Also under monument stands in the rectory of the church Straße 7 . It was built in 1820 southeast of the church.
