With his motu proprio of November 20, 1565, Pope Pius IV commissioned the Brotherhood of Palafrenieri to build a church near the Apostolic Palace. It was consecrated in 1583. The architect was Giacomo da Vignola .
Madonna dei Palafrenieri
In 1603 the brotherhood ordered a painting of St. Anne from Caravaggio for the altar of the Palafrenieri in St. Peter's Basilica . The work Madonna and Child and St. Anne , executed in 1605/06, was exhibited for a short time in the parish church and then sold to Cardinal Scipione Borghese , which is why it can now be seen in the Borghese Gallery .
