Santa Barbara Bowl

Santa Barbara Bowl is an open air - concert area above Santa Barbara , California . The area has been operated by the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation since 1994 . From April to October, an average of around 27 mainly pop concerts take place in the bowl. The stage has 4,562 seats.

history

The stage was built in 1936 for then 80,000 US dollars as a kind of job creation measure by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It was originally intended as a recreation area for the people of Santa Barbara.

In 1981 enthusiasts formed the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation to revitalize the grounds. In 1994, after long negotiations with Santa Barbara County , the Bowl Foundation took on responsibility for the management, maintenance and renovation of the historic site. The county continues to own the property. The Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation is run by community volunteers with the aim of making the Bowl the premier outdoor art venue in California.

Music history

Major artists from rock, pop, reggae and folk history played at the Santa Barbara Bowl again and again . For a long time, the stage was a transit point for artists who toured from Los Angeles to San Francisco . The reggae Sunsplash stopped at the Bowl.

In the bowl, u. a. Santana , Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan . More recently, Depeche Mode , The Kinks , Radiohead , REM , The Psychedelic Furs , Foo Fighters , Wilco have played on stage.

In 1979 Bob Marley and the Wailers played here .
