Santa Lucia (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Santa Lucia sung by Tino Rossi

Santa Lucia is a Neapolitan song ( canzone napoletana ) from the middle of the 19th century, which became famous especially in Scandinavia through the spread of the Lucia festival . It was published in 1849 by Teodoro Cottrau . It is uncertain whether he wrote the text and music himself or - more likely - just recorded and edited it.

Origin and reception

Naples, Borgo Santa Lucia around 1840

Cottrau published the song in 1849 as a barcarole in the Neapolitan dialect and translated it into Italian during the Risorgimento . The text praises the then picturesque fishing port of Borgo Santa Lucia on the Gulf of Naples , in the words of a shipper who invites you to take a boat trip in the refreshingly cool evening air.

The song soon became a worldwide success with translations, among others, into English by Thomas Oliphant, published in Baltimore by M. McCaffrey. The song was sung by Enrico Caruso as well as Elvis Presley (released in 1965 on the album Elvis for Everyone ). The best known Swedish version is the Lucia singing . The Czech variant praises the beauty of Naples . ( Krásná je Neapol ).

Sul mare luccica l'astro d'argento;
placida è l'onda, prospero il vento.
Venite all'agile barchetta mia!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

Con questo zeffiro soave
oh com'è bello star sulla nave!
Su passeggeri, venite via!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

In fra le tende bandir la cena
in una sera so serena
chi non dimanda, chi non desia?
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

O dolce Napoli, o suol beato,
ove sorridere full il creato!
Do be l'impero dell'armonia!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

The silver stars glitter on the sea;
the sea is calm, the wind favorable.
Come on my agile boat!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

With this gentle west wind,
oh how beautiful it is on the ship!
Come on, passengers!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

Invite you to dinner between the sun sails,
on such a serene evening,
who doesn't want that, who hasn't longed for it?
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

O sweet Naples, blissful land
where creation chose to smile!
You are the kingdom of harmony!
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia.
