Constantin "Tino" Rossi (born April 29, 1907 in Ajaccio , † September 26, 1983 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French actor and singer . He recorded more than 1,000 titles and sold 250 million records worldwide. This makes him the French artist with the best-selling records.

Life

Early years

Tino Rossi was born in Corsica in 1907 as the son of a tailor . His parents gave him a guitar at an early age, he composed a few songs and played in various bars in Ajaccio to earn some money. Later he decided to go to Marseille , where he worked in restaurants, in the meantime he followed the scene of the cabaret on the Côte d'Azur and thus made himself known to a wider audience. In the 1930s he went to Paris , where he made his final a name which allowed him to Columbia with great artists such as Lucienne Boyer , Damia , Pills et Tabet , Mireille , Jean Sablon and the eccentric billionaire La Môme Moineau to work.

His romantic ballads were particularly popular with female audiences; he sang songs with texts by Jules Massenet (1842–1912), Reynaldo Hahn (1875–1947) and others. Tino Rossi owed his success to his copywriter Vincent Scotto (1876–1952), who wrote him his first major successes. They worked together for many years. In order to record his first record, he asked his mother for five francs , quite a bit of money at the time. One of his first fees in 1933 was 500 francs a week in the Alcazar in Marseille . In 1944 he spent a few days in Fresnes prison near Paris (partly because he had sung to prisoners) , but was then released with an apology from the government.

After a first marriage in the 1930s (she had their daughter Pierrette) and a relationship with the actress Mireille Balin , in 1947 he married Lilia Vetti , a young dancer whom he had met while filming.

His recordings of the Christmas classic Petit Papa Noël are still popular decades after his death and return to the French charts year after year at the end of the year. He also made 25 films, the most important of which is Versailles - Kings and Women (original: Si Versailles m'était conté… ) 1953, directed and scripted by Sacha Guitry . In 1978 he and his son Laurent published a hymn to the Corsican football club SEC Bastia (Forza Bastia, Forza Corsica) , which the duo performed in both Corsican and French. His son Laurent had the international chart hit El Bimbo in 1974 with the formation Bimbo Jet .

Death and afterlife

In 1982 he was appointed Commander of the Legion of Honor by President François Mitterrand in recognition of his contribution to the spread of French culture. In the same year he made his last appearance in the casino in Paris. Tino Rossi, called by the inhabitants of Ajaccio "Tintin", died in 1983 at the age of 76 years to cancer . He was buried in a separate burial chapel in the Ajaccio cemetery.

His son Laurent's family lives in his beachfront property on the western outskirts of Ajaccio. The house is opened for tours every summer.
