Santa Maria Immacolata di Lourdes a Boccea is a parish and titular church in the Roman quarter of Aurelio on Via Santa Bernadette. The church is dedicated to Saint Mary under her titles of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Lourdes.
history
The church was planned for a school and a monastery of the L'Institut de l'Immaculée-Conception de Notre-Dame de Lourdes . This congregation was founded in the 16th century in Notre-Dame-de-Garaison in the Hautes-Pyrénées department , France. In 1897 the sisters founded a convert in Rome and in 1911 bought a farm at the intersection of Via di Boccea and Via della Pineta Sacchetti. Although only four kilometers from St. Peter's Basilica , it was a rural area. They opened a school that got a good reputation. In the 1950s, the area urbanized. In 1950 the generalate was transferred to the Church of Immacolata Concezione di Nostra Signora di Lourdes a Via Sistina , which is now a hotel.
The church was built and opened in 1958 according to plans by architects Domenico Placidi and Luciano Folli . The church was consecrated on February 11, 1965, on the 107th anniversary of the apparition of Mary in Lourdes . The parish was founded on November 1st, 1978 by a decree by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti and given to the Oblates of St. Joseph for pastoral care .
Pope John Paul II elevated it to the title Church on May 25, 1985 and visited it on November 8, 1992.
