Santa Maria degli Agonizzanti

The Santa Maria degli Agonizzanti is a church in Palermo .

The church was built in 1630 on behalf of the brotherhood Maria degli Agonizzanti. The facade of the church on Via Giovanni da Procida is structured by a central projectile and pilasters . The brotherhood's coat of arms is affixed to the triangular gable of the portal. Above it is a tympanum supported by agraffes with a banner framed by putti . Above the cranked cornice , the simple upper floor with an unadorned window opens into a flat triangular gable.

In the course of a renovation by the architect Antonio Interguglielmi between 1778 and 1784, the former stucco decorations by Procopio and Giacomo Serpotta inside the church were destroyed and the church's clear shapes gave it an elegant, simple appearance. Instead of the lush stucco you can now find various pictures. Elia Interguglielmi created the frescoes with scenes from the life of Mary in 1782. Ignazio Marabitti created a white marble relief for the altar made of polichtomem marble. Behind the altar hangs a painting by a contemporary Sicilian artist from the late 18th century. There are also monochrome pictures by Giuseppe Velasco on the story of St. Clara.
