Santa Maria della Grazia , also Santa Maria della Cavana or simply la Grazia is an island in the Venice lagoon . It has an area of 3.81 hectares and is 345 meters southeast of the Giudecca . 610 meters further south is the island of San Clemente and 1100 meters east is the island of San Servolo .

history

With permission from October 12, 1264, the island became the seat of an inn for pilgrims to the Holy Land . Marco Bollani, Abbot of San Giorgio Maggiore , commissioned a Lorenzo to set up a corresponding monastery there, which later maintained the congregation of the Eremiti di San Girolamo from Fiesole , founded in 1405 ; it existed until 1668.

Capuchin nuns later took over the monastery until the order was abolished by Napoleon in 1806. The island silted up because rubble was sunk there for a long time. In 1849 a powder magazine installed there exploded. Sick people with highly contagious diseases were quarantined there until the 20th century .

The island was sold in early 2010.
