Santa Maria della Visitazione (also called Artigianelli or San Gerolamo dei Gesuati) is the precursor church of Santa Maria del Rosario (I Gesuati) in Venice. It is located on the Zattere in the Dorsoduro sestiere, just a few steps from I Gesuati.

history

In 1392 some clergymen from Siena from the order of the Blessed Giovanni Columbini settled on the Zattere in the house of the brotherhood of the "poor Gesuati ". In 1423, with donations from the faithful and gifts from Francesco I Gonzaga , Duke of Mantua , a cloister and an oratory dedicated to St. Jerome were built. Thanks to the foundations of Doge Nicolò Marcello , the patriarch Tommaso Donato was able to lay the foundation stone for a more worthy church in 1493, which was consecrated in 1524 under the title Santa Maria della Visitazione. 1668 the order of the Jesuaten by Pope Clement IX. dissolved, the property confiscated by the Republic of Venice and the complex sold to the Dominicans . The simple church soon no longer met the requirements and the much larger church of Santa Maria del Rosario , which is still called "I Gesuati" today, was built just next to it in 1726–43 . The small church was now used as a library. In 1810 the monastery fell victim to secularization by the French. Under the Austrian regime (1815-1859) there was an orphanage here. Since 1923 the complex has belonged to the Don Orione Foundation , which first set up an orphanage with a vocational school for craftsmen (Artigiani), then a dormitory for students, and which now has a modern conference center here.

The construction

The authorship for this church with its beautiful Renaissance facade has not yet been clarified. The elegant architecture of the facade corresponds to the simple interior with a remarkable wooden flat ceiling. The saints and prophets of the Old and New Testaments are shown on 58 tablets. In the center a tondo with Mary's visit to Elisabeth. The tablets date from the beginning of the 16th century and are attributed to Pietro Paolo Agabiti and his school (approx. 1470–1539). Many works of art were brought to either the Accademia or other churches after 1750 . So we find the crucifixion of Tintoretto today in the nearby church of Santa Maria del Rosario . Organ doors, painted by Titian , ended up in a private collection in New York. The church still houses notable works of art such as the “Pentecostal Miracle” by Alessandro Varotari and a crucifixion attributed to Nicolò Renieri . A “ Bocca di Leone ” has been preserved on the right outer facade . Here complaints and denunciations could be thrown in by the citizens.
