Life

Resting Venus with Cupid by Alessandro Varotari

Alessandro Varotari was born in Padua, which is what his later stage name Padovanino is based on. He was the son of Dario Varotari the Elder, a local painter, sculptor and architect (1539–1596) and Samaritana, the daughter of Giovan Battista Ponchino. The family had German origins.

In 1614 Varotari moved to Venice, where he worked as a painter and lived until his death. In his early works - such as The Incredibility of St. Thomas (1610; Padua, Santa Lucia) - the artistic influence of Titian is very much reflected. Some of the pictures from this period are downright reproductions of the master. But with increasing experience, Varotari's independent work also gained significantly in importance.

Varotari visited Rome at least twice (around 1610 and 1625) where he studied the works of Michelangelo and Annibale Carracci . There he received orders to copy the works of important artists of the Renaissance and thus earned his living.

Well-known students of Varotari were Pietro Liberi , Giulio Carpioni and Bartolommeo Scaligero , among others .

Works by Varotari can be found in the collections of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie , the Baroque Gallery in the Ludwigsburg Palace and the State Museum Oldenburg .
