Giulio Carpioni (* 1613 in Venice , † January 29, 1678 in Vicenza ) was an Italian painter and etcher of the early Venetian Baroque .

Life

Giulio Carpioni was a student of the Venetian painter Alessandro Varotari . Through him he became aware of the works of Titian early on , but the works of Jean Leclerc and Carlo Saraceni also influenced his artistic development.

Around 1631 he and Varotari traveled to Bergamo , where they studied Lombard art. On the way back to Venice Carpioni met the painter Pietro della Vecchia . The etchings by Odoardo Fialetti, Simone Cantarini and Pietro Testa , as well as, indirectly through the latter, the Bacchus motifs by Nicolas Poussin , which Testa took up in his works, had further influences on his own work .

In 1638 Carpioni settled in Vicenza. His earliest dated works are two lunettes , The Glorification of the Podestà Vincenzo Dolfin (1647) and the Glorification of the Podestà Girolamo Bragadin (1648), whose style is very reminiscent of the painter Francesco Maffei and both of which are now in the Vicenza Municipal Museum.

This was followed by The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine (1648; Vicenza, Santa Caterina Church), a self-portrait ( Pinacoteca di Brera ) and mythological frescoes (approx. 1650, Villa Caldogno Nordera). At that time Maffei's baroque style of painting dominated the art scene in Vicenza and this influence was also strongly reflected in Carpioni's works at the time, such as B. The Adoration of the Magi (c. 1650; Vicenza, Museum Civico). His painting of St. Nicholas' Expulsion of Demons (c. 1656; Vicenza, Chapel Santa Nicola), dated a few years later, shows a turning away from the exuberance of the Baroque and towards the naturalness of Caravaggio .

After Maffei left the city in 1657 to move to Padua, Carpioni's most creative phase began. Several works by him can be found in the Santa Chiara chapel in Vicenza (e.g. The Five Saints , 1663). He also created other impressive frescoes that are now in museums and buildings in the city. His most important late work dates from 1671 and is on the ceiling of the Chapel of St. Nicholas in Vicenza. There are eleven images depicting the triumph of St. Nicholas and the virtues . His small-format, charming bacchanals , which reflect the influence of Testa and Titian, are particularly original . Other subjects preferred by Carpioni were the victory of Silenus and the realm of Hypnos, which inspired him to create various images.

In addition to oil painting , he also made numerous etchings, mostly with religious and mythological motifs. Today, for example, they can be viewed in the Uffizi or the Ashmolean Museum .
