The Basilica of Santi Siro e Materno is a church in Desio in Lombardy . The parish church of the Archdiocese of Milan is dedicated to Saints Syrus and Maternus and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church in the center of Desio originally dates from the middle of the 7th century. It is said to have been built by the Archbishop of Milan, St. John I Bonus, to convert the Longobards of this region to Catholicism. The bell tower is a massive square structure that was erected in Gothic forms and is attributed to the master Comacini in the 11th century, but after a fire in the middle of the 15th century, essential parts could only have been built afterwards.

At the end of the 16th century, under Archbishop Karl Borromeo , an extended reconstruction was sought, but construction did not begin until 1652 with the demolition of the old church. The work was carried out by builders Pietro Pozzi and Carlo Giuseppe Merlo based on plans by Camillo Ciniselli. The church was built in the next hundred years, until 1744 was carried out by Milan's Archbishop Giuseppe Pozzobonelli the consecration .

In the 19th century, the church was expanded by building the transept with the erection of the dome for the growing population, the interior was lavishly furnished. In 1857 the later Pope Pius XI. baptized in the church. After the work was completed, the basilica was consecrated again on August 24, 1895 by Cardinal Andrea Carlo Ferrari . In 1936 Pope Pius XII raised the church to the rank of minor basilica. The church was restored at the beginning of the 21st century, and in 2020 the outer dome had to be renovated.
