Santo Estêvão is a Portuguese place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Estremoz with 74 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

On September 29, 2013, the parishes of Santo Estêvão and São Bento do Cortiço were merged to form the new parish União das Freguesias de São Bento do Cortiço e Santo Estêvão .

Since the local elections in Portugal in 2009, Santo Estêvão has not been ruled by one of the major parties, but by the MiETZ - Movimento independente por Estremoz ( Portuguese for: Independent Movement for Estremoz). Mayor Dias had already been elected as an independent candidate in 2005, before running for the MiETZ list in 2009.

With only 93 voters, Santo Estêvão was one of the most populous municipalities in Portugal in the 2009 election. A peculiarity of the Portuguese local electoral law came into play here, which allows the mayor to be elected directly in a town hall. In the meantime, the population of the municipality has continued to decline.
