São Bento do Cortiço is a Portuguese place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Estremoz with 699 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
On September 29, 2013, the parishes of São Bento do Cortiço and Santo Estêvão were merged to form the new parish União das Freguesias de São Bento do Cortiço e Santo Estêvão . São Bento do Cortiço is the seat of this newly formed municipality.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1424 . The place was noted as São Bento da Aldeia da Talha in 1555 , and has been an independent municipality since at least 1651 . In 1819 the place was called São Bento da Aldeia dos Cortiços , and the place has had its current name since the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century.
Culture and sights
The place is known for its marionettes and its tradition of puppetry, which has been documented since the 16th century.
The local church, which was built from 1534 , is worth seeing . Also Antas called megalithic Neolithic times lie in the municipal area.
