Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia (Ceranesi)
The Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia ( German Shrine of Our Lady of the Guard ) is the most important Marian pilgrimage church in the Italian region of Liguria and has been a minor basilica since 1915 . It was built in the 16th century on the summit of Monte Figogna (804 m) and belongs to the municipality of Ceranesi , about 20 km from the regional capital Genoa . The name of the church comes from the strategically important location it occupies on the mountain top. In ancient times this point was used to monitor ships on the Ligurian Sea and to identify enemy movements.
From the terrace of the church there is a panoramic view of the city of Genoa and the coast of the Italian Riviera . When visibility is good, the island of Corsica and the Matterhorn can be made out.
In 2008 Pope Benedict XVI awarded the Golden Rose during his visit to the church .
