It rises in East Machonaland near the border with West Machonaland , about 30 km north of Chivhu . It first flows west through the Ngezi Recreational Park, which is built around the Ngezi reservoir.
About halfway along the way, it turns north. It flows past the village of Sanyati before taking up the Mupfure . In its lower reaches the right bank is a safari area . There the river forms the eastern border to the Matusadona National Park and finally flows into the Kariba Dam at the state border with Zambia .
Above Gokwe , the Sanyati is used to irrigate cotton fields.
