Sarah B. Pomeroy

Sarah B. Pomeroy (born March 13, 1938 in New York City ) is an American classical philologist and ancient historian .

Pomeroy, who in 1978 received his doctorate, was Distinguished Professor of Classics at Hunter College of the City University of New York , then at Brooklyn College , at Vassar College and at Columbia University . In 2004 she retired . She is best known in the English-speaking world for her publications on the cultural history of antiquity , especially on the history of women. She is also known as a translator and commentator (for example on Xenophon's Oekonomikos ). Her most important work is Goddesses, Whores, Wives and Slaves. Woman in Classical Antiquity (1975, since then more than ten new editions). With the book, it was the onset of the pioneer in the 1970s and the Ancient Studies reaching gender studies in the US and worldwide. In 2014 she was elected to the American Philosophical Society .
