The Sarcopera are a genus of plants from the Marcgraviaceae family with nine species .

description

Sarcopera are overgrown shrubs or lianas , rarely small trees that often grow epiphytically . The leaves are sessile or stalked, sometimes asymmetrical.

The inflorescences form spikes from 100 to 450 (rarely from 35) flowers . Flower stalks are absent or rarely extremely reduced.

The nectaries are stalked, lie - at least in the upper half of the inflorescence - on the inflorescence axis at the flower base and are bowl-shaped or sack-shaped.

The brightly colored flowers are five-fold, the petals are not overgrown or weakly overgrown at the base. There are eight to twenty-five (rarely six) stamens , the stamens are ingrown or fused with the crown. The ovaries are completely two-, three- or five-chambered with four to eight (rarely up to twelve) ovules per chamber. One stylus is missing.

distribution

The genus is New World , its range extends from Honduras over the Andes to northern Bolivia and the Guiana highlands .

The genus contains eight species:

Sarcopera oxystylis (Baill.) Bedell ex Gir.-Cañas is now classified as Pseudosarcopera oxystylis (Baill.) Gir.-Cañas in the genus Pseudosarcopera Gir.-Cañas .
