Depiction of Sarenput at the entrance to his grave

Sarenput I was head of the priesthood and mayor of Elephantine and the first Upper Egyptian district in the ancient Egyptian Middle Kingdom (around 1950 BC). He is best known for his monumental tomb (No. 36) on the Qubbet el-Hawa and for foundations in the sanctuary of the local saint Heqaib .

In his grave, but also on a the sanctuary of Heqaib donated shrine , there are detailed biographical inscriptions that tell about life Sarenputs. Most of them are ideal biographies that trace an ideal life, but there are also references to concrete events in the life of Sarenput. The father of Sarenput I was called Hapi, his grandfather Nebchenti. The name of his mother, but also his wife, was Sattjeni. Nothing more is known of his father and grandfather, as they do not bear any titles on their son's monuments . According to the inscriptions in his tomb, Sarenput was installed in his office by King Sesostris I. The king led a campaign to Nubia and Sarenput seems to have helped. In gratitude for his deeds, the ruler sent craftsmen to build his grave. Sarenput I was also the first to donate a chapel to the sanctuary of the local saint Heqaib. His son Heqaib I. succeeded him in the office of mayor.
